The Austin Public Works and Austin Transportation departments are developing improvements to help students walk and bike to school.  The Safe Routes to School program and Austin Transportation have identified a project to improve routes to Gorzycki Middle School & Mills Elementary School by adding several new bikeway connections and improved pedestrian crossing along streets serving these schools and surrounding neighborhoods.

Project Background

Projects for the Gorzycki Middle School & Mills Elementary School were selected from recommendations in the District 8 Safe Routes to School Infrastructure report.  Projects are evaluated based on demand, safety, equity and stakeholder input.

The project team has evaluated:

  • Allerton Avenue from Gorzycki Middle School access just west of Colberg Drive to Barstow Avenue
  • Barstow Avenue from Allerton Avenue to Escarpment Boulevard
  • Hillside Terrace Drive from Barstow Avenue to Escarpment Boulevard
  • Lantana Way from Davis Lane to Hillside Terrace Drive
  • Escarpment Boulevard from Taylorcrest Drive to Hillside Terrace Drive
  • Taylorcrest Drive from Escarpment Boulevard to Beckett Road

Together, these streets offer connectivity to, from and between Gorzycki Middle School and Mills Elementary School, as well as nearby trails and parks.

Funding for these improvements is made possible through the Safe Routes to School Program and the Bikeways Program of the 2016 Mobility Bond.
